TENNIS CHAMPIONS
WIMBLEDON TOURNEY GRAMM BEATS M'GRATH Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, July I.' (Received July 2, at 11 a.m.) The weather was hot and sfiltry for the Wimbledon tennis. Crawford’s ground and overhead strokes were much safer than* Wood’s in the early part of the match. The tennis generally was of a high character. The enthusiasm of 15,000 spectators was raised by superb recoveries by both men. The third and fourth sets were hotly contested, the American driving splendidly, but Craw-, ford was supremely accurate in the final set. Both were exhausted after two and a-quarter hours’ battle. Gramm’s great service was brought into deadly use against M'Grath, and the German’s forehand and backhand drives had the Australian chasing to alternate corners. It was only by a clever defensive struggle that M'Grath won the third set, but Gramm’s drives were too severe in the final set, and the Australian was hopelessly beaten. Perry further justified his favouritism by a dazzling display in the second and third sets, after quelling the fiery Menzel in the first set, when the Czech was in brilliant mood, with a devastating service and amazing control of ground shots. 1 .
England’s hopes received a great setback when Budge, with calm, deliberate stroking and greater accuracy, eliminated Austin. The Californian is certain to achieve great things.
