Laval admitted that the real deficit was onuch more than the £147,000,000 estimated, and it was increasing every day. “ The amount of revenue becomes more and more uncertain. I will not tell you what corrective measures are intended. It is only because they are still unknown that I am able to _walk the streets in France in peace, but all sections must make sacrifices. If my policy makes me unpopular, let unpopularity be my reward.” •
