SIX AND A-HALF YEARS UP ON 1910 SCIENTIST EXPLAINS WHY. LONDON, June 23. People are living longer than they did 25 years ago. Listen to Sir Frank Smith, 'secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, lecturing in London on achievements in the King’s reign:— “ There are tens of thousands of people who saw the jubilee procession who would hgve been dead had it not been for the application of knowledge gained in the spheres of medicine, engineering, and chemistry. The scientific attack on disease is still in its early stages. “ But just as engineers give us results in terms of increased life of a motor tyre or modern boiler, so can those who in the fight against suffering and disease point proudly to a figure of six and a-half years for the average increase in the expectancy of life during the last 25 years. The increase is not due to taking better care of ourselves. It is the .result of better water supplies, better hygiene, And increased skill jn surgery.’-
