SLIP BLOCKS TUNNEL
MAIN TRUNK TRAINS DIVERTED RUNNING ON STRATFORD LINE fPas United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, July 1. Late this afternoon a landslip blocked the tunnel on the Main Trunk line between Maugaweka and Utiku, and in consequence railway traffic lias had to be diverted, and north and south-bound expresses have been delayed. The Railway Department states that it will not be able'to ascertain the full extent of the slip or an estimate of the damage done to the tunnel until to-morrow. Meanwhile both the Limited and ordinary expresses in both directions have been diverted to the Strat-ford-Okahdkura line. Being longer, this route entails a certain amount of delay, and the ordinary express, which would normally arrive in Wellington at 7.42, is not now expected until about 9 a.m. The Limited will probably not arrive until 12.30 p.m. To-day’s northbound expresses will be similarly delayed.
It is quite possible that an inspection may reveal that the damage is not serious, in which case it may prove possible to run to-morrow’s _ expresses through by the normal Main Trunk route. All other north-bound traffic, however, will meanwhile be despatched through Stratford.
