HOUSES IN WINTER

EFFECT OF GAS FIRES Although the homely warmth of wood and coal fires will always hold an appeal, the modern tendency is to use manufactured heat, and scientific research to obtain the best forms of heating at Minimum cost is being conducted in all civilised countries- An interesting inquiry was made recently by Dr C. W. Saleeby, a leading medical practitioner and writer in England (states the ‘ Telegraph,’ Sydney. He found that gas fires are healthy. First, they assist in ventilating a room because they draw a steady supply of fresh air, so that the whole atmosphere is changed five or six times in an hour. Gas fires also have the property of omitting the short infra-red rays of the invisible spectrum. These _ pass through the air without heating it (as is the case with sunlight), but are absorbed by the body and other solid objects. Possilby due to the influence of Dr Saleeby, more probably from their own experience, doctors usually warm their homes and surgeries with gas fires. It is estimated three out of every four in London do so, and that the same heating medium is used in 90 per cent, of London’s hospitals.
