EREGTED 1 ONE SUITE TO COST ABOUT . £20,000 The ever-increasing, demand. for flats by city dwellers is apparent in Christchurch by the announcement that the construction of two more blocks is in hand. , „„„ „„„ A sum between £19,000 and £20,000 U to be spent on the erection of a four-story block of flats behind the clock tower at the intersection of Montreal, Salisbury, and Victoria streets. Preparatory work was started 'last week, and the job will take about 10 months to complete and will provide direct employment for about 50 men. . . ' ■ . The building will contain 21 flats, One of which will be on the roof. The Bats will be erected, on the most modern lines, and the rooms are to be made considerably larger than those in most blocks that have been erected in recent years. There will be flats of one, two, , and three rooms, while on each floor there will be an additional bedroom and bathroom that will be let but to tenants on occasions when they require extra accommodaThe block will have frontages of about 100 ft, 82ft, and 86ft to Montreal, Salisbury, and Victoria streets respectively. Only that portion facing Montreal and Salisbury street will be of four stories, the section facing Victoria street being of a single story. This latter part will accommodate a. garage and coffee shop that will be run in conjunction with the flats.. At the backvof the block there will be a spacious yard available for the use of tenants. ; Work has also commenced on the erection of a block of flats in Gracefield avenue., which runs from Peter- - borough street to Durham street, at a cost of £4,600. The contract, which was signed towards the end of last week, provides for the completion of the work by December. Ten flats will be provided, all designed and fitted according to the most recent developments in this type of dwelling (says <£)ll6 I PfeSS *) The building will be situated at the right-angled turn of Gracefield avenue, on the north-west corner, where there is now a vacant section. In keeping with the trend of modern architecture, it will be distinguished by simplicity of line, and the absence pf unnecessary detail. The design is the most’ noteworthy feature, for_ it embodies a principle of flat planning which has not been used in _ Christchurch before. The building is to be H shaped, so that every .flat will gain all the available sun and_ light. It will be of two stories, of brick

and concrete construction, and the exterior will be rendered in stucco of ✓ two tones, with coloured concrete for the fences and paths. , Each flat will he entirely self-con-tained, and will consist Of living room, bedroom, bathroom, and kitchenette, two of the suites having two bedrooms. Separate entrances will be i provided to each flat. A distinctive colour scheme will be used in the interior decoration of each suite. Cooking and heating arrangements will be operated by electricity, and each living room will have a . fireplace.
