THE NAVAL AGREEMENT

BRITAIN TRUSTS GERMANY STATEMENT BY MR BALDWIN Press Association—By i Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, June 29. Mr Stanley Baldwin, speaking at Leeds, emphasised that the. AngloGerman agreement did not imply deyiation from whole-hearted co-operation with France and Italy, which was reaffirmed at Stresa. The naval agreement appeared to be a practical, . straightforward step towards international limitation of armaments. “ I profoundly regret that one or two members of the House of Commons are suggesting that the Germans cannot be trusted to keep their word. Unless you _ trust people when attempting to initiate disarmament you revert to the law of the jungle, making progress impossible. I believe the Germans and ourselves entered the agreement with equally honourable motives.” NAZI ELATION AGAIN A GREAT SOVEREIGN POWER. BERLIN, June 30. (Received July 1, at 9.45 a.m.) “ The fact that Britain has concluded a naval agreement with Germany proves that Germany is again a great sovereign Power,” declared Dr Goebbels, addressing 150,000 Nazis assembled on Templeliof Field during the congress held on the eve of the anniversary of last year’s Nazi “ purge,” when 200 were executed. Dr Goebbels added: “We want to threaten nobody, but want nobody to threaten us. The army and Nazism will ensure external peace.” Dr Gocbbels’s only reference to foreign affairs was his declaration that Germany’s re-entering the League of Nations would be a delusion.
