UNREST IN SPAIN
OUTBREAK OF SABOTAGE AND TERRORISM STATE OF WAR DECLARED IN BARCELONA Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright MADRID. June 29. An outbreak of sabotage and terrorism in Catalonia resulted in a Cabinet decision to declare a state of war in Barcelona City and Province. The Ministers of War and the Interior are flying to Barcelona to-day to • take necessary measures for suppression of the outbreak, CAVALRY PATROLLING STREETS
LONDON, June 30, (Received July 1, at 12.45 p.m.)
The Barcelona correspondent of ‘ The Times ’ states that squads of cavalry patrol the streets, and police and Civil Guards, armed with Mausers, are posted at public buildings. The Ministers of War and Interior (Senor Gil Robles and Senor Portela) have arrived, and authorised that attempts at violence and "demonstrations be dealt with by martial law. The decision is fully justified, as almost the complete breakdown of law and order in recent months is due largely to, the rebellious attitude of a section of the police, 58 of whom were dismissed last week. Assassinations and attempts against employers, and the burning of trams and buses are alarmingly frequent.
