It is a , very big,improve-' fheiit .r/. . the light that has hoemin, operation fur several years. From’ 1916 the light at Nohbys had been operated by gas obtained from cylinders which were installed ju the base of the lighthouse. The_ light itself went on and off automatically, being controlled by a valve _ outside -the lighthouse proper. This apparatus was sensitive to light and shade, switching the light on in a certain degree of darkness and switching if off at a certain degree of light. The new group flashing light has increased the power of the flash from 10,000 candle power to 580,000 candle power, and is designed to penetrate the thick weather sometimes experienced by mariners when approaching Newcastle. The flashes are operated by a series of lenses known as optics, which revolve around the stationary light. Three flashes will be shown in a given period. One is made through a powerful glass known as a bull's eye, and the other two follow quickly through a split bull’s eye. The electricity for the new light is obtained from the City Council’s supply, hut to guard against possible failures a stand-by generating set has also been installed. _ This set will be automatically on should the city power fail. The whole system is said to be foolproof. When switched on the new light .worked satisfactorily, the periodical flashes throwing a swift, bright stab of light across the darkening waters.
