INCREASES IN OTHER CENTRES THE AUCKLAND FIGURES The increase in imports, which was shown in the March to May Customs figures this year compared with 1934, was continued again in_ June. The Customs duty collected in Auckland in Juno totalled £180,647, a increase of £II,BBB on the amount collected in June, 1934. Compared with the sum of £153,992 collected in June, 1933, there was an advance of £26,655. Although the collections for the six months also show an increase, the improvement is not so marked as that made in the first six months of 1934 over the correponding_ period of 1933. For the six months just ended £1,248,563 was collected in Customs duty, an increase of £14,647 over the £1,233,916 collected in the first six months of 1934. In the January-June period of 1933 only £1,034,018 was collected, so that the 1934 period showed an advance of £199,898. Although this year’s figures are only £14,647 in excess of last year’s they are, however, £214,545 better than those for 1933._ Sales tax returns also show an increase, the sum of £57,294 collected last month being £9,344 greater than the £47,905 collected in June, 1934. In the six-monthly period £324,977 was collected, compared with £294,450 in the corresponding period last year, an increase of £30,527. The receipts-of petrol and tyre duties last month totalled £36,728, compared with £39,416 in June. 1934. a decrease of £2,688. There was, however, an increase over the six months, £294,675 having been collected this year, or £20,117 more than the £274,558 received in the first half of last year. The beer duty return is the only one to show a decrease in both the monthly and six-monthly figures. Last month £8,493 was collected under this head, compared with £10,189 in June, 1934, a decrease of £1,696. The six-monthly receipts were £64,910, a decrease of £2,890 on the 1934 half-yearly total of £67,800, WELLINGTON.

The improvement shown in the Customs revenue over last year has been continued during June, a substantial increase being recorded in the net revenue. There was a decrease in the motor spirit tax and in beer duty, but the sales tax returns showed a substantial rise. The net Customs revenue for June totalled £188,697, compared with £154,052 for the corresponding period of the previous year. The net total for the first six months of the year was £l.267,782, an increase of £207,867 on the first six months of 1934. The motor spirit duty for June totalled £22,814 at 6d a gallon and £15,211 at 4d a gallon, a total of £38,025, which represented a decrease of £12,499. During the half-year £337,931 has been collected. For tyre tax £1,326 was collected during the month, an increase of £3B over June, 1934. The six months’ figures are £11,621. Sales tax realised £75,085 during the month, an increase of £20,042. During tho six months £407,935 has been collected, and since the tax was first imposed on February 10, 1933, £1,530,796. Beer excise duty during June showed a decrease of £213, the figures being £3,658 and £3,871 respectively. For the first half of the year £26,641 was collected. CHRISTCHURCH. The Customs returns for June, 1935, compared with the corresponding month of last year show a general increase in all the principal items. The net Customs revenue for June, 1935, was £57,776, compared with £56,072 last year; sales tax, £25,714 (£22,780); petrol tax, £16,546 (£14,847); tyre tax, £895 (£789); beer duty, £6,255 (£6,172). For the six months of this .year the Customs figures also show a substantial increase over those for the same period of last year. The figures are as follow: —Customs, £417,138 (£393,331 in 1934) ; b'eer, £40,695 (£30,965); sales tax, £154,031 (£139,353); petrol tax, £115.941 (£102,204); tyre duty, £5,567 (£4,844).
