CYCLING

AMATEURS Fourteen riders of the Dunedin Amateur Cycling Club faced the starter (Mr Fletcher) in the first cross-country race, the course being from Green Island Fire Brigade Station, round the block, and turning on to the Brighton road as far as Barnes’s Corner, and then following a mile of very rough cross-country scrambling, and back to the road again and home. '' In the opening stages Greenfield and Kewish led for a time till replaced by W. Sivertsen. Going into the rough Ralston and Templeton went into the lead, and held this position till the finish. Results: — W. Templeton 1 C. Ralston 2 J. Kilner 3 W. Sivertson 4 Fastest times, C. Ralston, with W. Templeton and G. Sinclair next. PROFESSIONALS The Otago Athletic and Cycling Club held the fourth race of the Beale Cup series from Beale’s Hotel, Green Island, to Brighton and return in adverse weather conditions, the course being particularly rough, and the riders encountered a very strong head wind on the outward journey. The limit men, Reddell and Marsh, set off at a good clip, followed by Finnerty and O’Neil, Finnerty making the pace a cracker from the gun, followed by Cannon, Cooper, and Welsh off (2imin), and then Hay (scr). .Welsh and Cannon were going well, shook Cooper off, and were first to turn, then followed Finnerty, Reddell, and O’Neil, Marsh (who was riding very well for a novice), Cooper, and Hay. On the return Cannon was unlucky to spill, and Welsh went on to win fairly comfortably (his second race this season), then followed Cannon. Hay and O’Neil were next, and had a good “ go ” for third place, O’Neil getting there by a tyre. Hay was foui'h, followed by Finnerty and Reddell, who both sprinted well. Following are the official placings : —.l. Welsh 1, M. Cannon 2, K. O’Neil 3, A. J. Hay 4, .). Finnerty 5, S. Reddell 6, T. Marsh 7, H. Cooper 8. J. Welsh also gained fastest time.
