BETTER BREATHERS WANTED

Crankcase breathers in the past have always been regarded as necessary nuisances, and very little thought has been given to their design. Even in 1 1935. one finds that the bulk of them are crude and are planned merely .to provide an outlet for excess pressure which would otherwise build up and cause oil to be forced into the clutch

, pit, the distributor and so forth. \ In the case of four-cylinder engines \ there is in the crankcase a definite , pumping action. Perhaps, in future this pumping will be employed to admit air through a non-return valve at one end of the crankcase casting and to expel it via another non-return valve at the other end. Motor cycles have used scientifically • . planned breathers for years, the outlet pipe open being led to the primary transmission chain which it lubricates quite effectively.
