Opening the carnival, the mayor (Rev. E. T. Cox) eulogised the efforts of the committees of the respective four queens, and wished the carnival every success. ,

The competitions resulted as follow: Pikelets, Miss Harris, 53 Rawhiti street; scones, Miss Harris, 53 Rawhiti street; plain sponge, Mrs H. E. Wells, Begg street; fruit cake, Mrs Moore, 102 Albany street; most useful article, Mr Cheshire, 7 Vise street; best article from Iyd of cotton material, Mrs Munro, Harbour terrace; nail driving (for women), Mrs Ruth; balloon bursting (for boys), Master Stanley Watson. During the evening . the Waverley Bovs’ Brass Band presented an enjoyable selected programme. The carnival will be continued to-night, also to-mor-row afternoon and evening. To-morrow afternoon Big Brother Bill, of 4YA, will judge the children’s fancy_ dress and the decorated prams and tricycles competitions.
