UNEMPLOYMENT

WORKERS’ MOVEMENT The executive of the Dunedin branch of the National Unemployed Workers Movement held its weekly meeting on Tuesday evening. Mr L. Cecil, vicepresident, occupied the chair. It was agreed that the circular from the National Executive dealing with sustenance be held over for further consideration. The report of the - Social Committee was adopted, and the secretary intimated that he was at present arranging for an evening to entertain all the unemployed and thenwives and children, it was suggested that a propaganda committee be appointed at an early date. Various accounts were passed for payment. The secretary reported that 22 members joined the movement since the general meeting, and that various jobs had appointed delegates. 1 DEBATE ON UNEMPLOYMENT The Trades Hall was well filled last Sunday evening for the hearing of the debate arranged by the National Unemployed Workers’ Movement, the subject being ‘ Can Unemployment be Solved?’ Cr M. Silverstone presided. The speakers for the affirmative were Messrs Robb and Kennedy, and for the negative Messrs Maclure and H. Silverstone. The judge was Mr J. Saunders, who recently returned to Dunedin after a world’s tour. At the conclusion of the debate the , four speakers were complimented by the judge on the very able manner in which they handled their subject, and also on the friendly spirit shown throughout. Mr Saunders, in summing up, said it was unfortunate that the subject was vague, failing as it did to specify under which system (for the purpose of the debate) unemployment was to be solved. This fact, and also the fact that the affirmative speakers to a debate were always at a disadvantage, had imposed a serious handicap on Messrs Robb and Kennedy. Mr Saunders said that as the affirmative speakers had failed, in his opinion, to put forward any means whereby unemployment could be solved, he was compelled to award the debate to the speakers on the negative side. TRADES HAIL DANCE The Trades Hall was again well filled .last Friday evening at a dance held under the auspices of the National Unemployed Workers’ Movement. Mr Hyman Isaacs, as judge of the Destiny competition, selected the following couples to compete in the final: —Miss Gilchrist and Mr Legg, Mr and Mrs Andrews, Miss Dore and Mr M‘lncloe, and Miss Wilson and Mr Geddes. The Monte Carlo was won by Miss Thomson and Mr Phillips, the lucky spot by Miss Frew and Mr Bain, and the lucky number was held by Mr M'Taggart, NO. 4 DISTRICT This evening the usual dance, will take place in the South Dunedin Town Hall. The committee is ever foremost in presenting to the dancing public something new or novel, these activities being fully appreciated by, the large numbers who make their appearance at the functions. Ou this evening’s programme' there will bo two Monte Carlos and other attractions. The Triumph Band will be heard in new numbers. Patrons are reminded of the big event which is to take place on July 18. The main attraction is to be a screen star impersonators’ contest, for which exceptionally, good prizes are to be given.
