DELAYED POLL HINDERS WORK
EMPLOYEES PUT OFF (Pm United P'»fss Association.] WELLINGTON, June 4. The delay which occurred in making the final declaration of the City Council poll has had an extraordinary result in Wellington. At a iheeting of the Finance Committee of the City Council to-night the mayor (Mr T. C. A. Hislop) said it was correct that a number of employees had been put off that day. During the last few months tho council carried a number of men on a kerbing and channellig scheme. Authority was given to extend the scheme, and it had been hoped to start work sufficiently soon to avoid displacing the workmen. “ Unfortunately,” continued the mayor, “in the first place the unusual delay in bringing about the final declaration of the City Council poll held us up. At the first meeting, when wo did meet we authorised the taking of the necessary stops to raise loan money. We are now awaiting an Order in Council. Had it not been for the delay we would have been at least a week ahead. The Order in Council will go through next Monday, and, that being so, some of these men will be re-engaged.
