The engagement has just been announced in Singapore of Clara 'May, only daughter of the late Air and Mrs A. Alurdoch, of Dunedin, to Flying Officer Norman George Goodman, of the Royal Air Force. The wedding will take place in London at the end of June.

Drake, who has been president of the Women’s Division qf the Farmers’ Union in Otago for the past four years, and who has retired from office this year, entertained the members of the executive to luncheon on Tuesday in the Otago Women’s Club. Airs W. A. Grieve was hostess at a morning tea party on Saturday at the Savoy, given in honour of Aliss Ala vis Grieve, who has been spending her vacation in Dunedin. The guests were Alesdames R. Lawson, E. D. Duthie, Sincook, and the Misses Ida Lawson, M‘Callum, Rona Allan, and- Ruby Barth.

Each year the Kindergarten Graduates’ Association makes some effort to help the funds of the parent body. Sales of works, dances, etc., have been exploited, and this year they have decided to hold a jumble sale on Saturday afternoon next in Stuart Hall, Frederick street. A great assortment of goods has been gathered by the members, who hope to find ready sale for these during the afternoon.

The Poetry Circle of the Otago Women’s Club held its June meeting on Tuesday afternoon, Miss Y. Reynolds presiding. A very interesting paper was given by Aliss Alnllin on ‘ The Irish Women Poets Aloira O’Neill, of Ulster, Ethna Carbery, of Connaught, Katharine Tynan, ami Winifred Letts, of Countv Dublin. A pleasant interlude was the ‘’speaking and singing of some of the poems by Aliss Holland, accompanied by herself on the zitha. Poems were read by various members of the circle.

The Taieri branch of the Women’s Institute celebrated its fifth, birthday on Wednesday, a pleasant evening being spent in playing progressive euchre and dancing. Mrs Kirkland (president)welcomed the visiting delegates, each of whom responded with greetings from her own institute. The birthday cake, decorated with five candles, was cut with due ceremony. Solos were sung by Aliss 0. Findlay and Air T. Jones, both responding to encores.

The second reunion of the Ex-Braemar House Association was hold at the Somerset Lounge on Friday evening. There were 56 present. The president (Mrs G. Thomson) .and the vice-presi-dent (Miss H. Kinmont) received the guests. The president warmly welcomed the visiting old girls. The first part of the evening was spent in business, chatting, and the reading of letters from- the Misses Miller. After supper there -were various competitions, and Mrs De Beer gave several musical items. On Thursday parishioners of the Anglican Church ami friends gathered in St. Luke’s Hall to hid farewell to Mr and Mrs E. Otway Taylor and family, who are shortly leaving Mosgiel. A happy evening was spent in music and dancing, songs being given by Mrs Murray Wilson. Miss L. Dyer, and Mr Snow.* After supper was served the Rev. Mr Ferry thanked Mr Taylor for his services to the church, and presented both Mr and Mrs Taylor with a writing set as tokens of esteem. Sincere regret' was expressed at their departure from the district. Mr Taylor suitably replied, and a happy evening ended at midnight.

On the occasion of the coming of age of their elder daughter, Jsobel, Mr and Mrs H. Wood, Mornington, held a delightful dance in the Mornington Bowling Pavilion on Saturday, May 25. The tables were prettily decorated in pink to match the frock of the guest of the evening. The principal toast was proposed by Mr it. B. Rennie. Mr G. Meiklejolm suitably replied on behalf of Miss Wood. The toast of the parents was proposed by Mr A. Walker, who eulogised the many lino qualities and hospitable natures of Mr and Mrs H. Wood. In a happy little speech Mr Wood presented Tsobel with a golden key. Mr S. Wood proposed the toast of absent friends, one of whom (Mrs G. Struthers, of Cheviot) made the beautiful birthday cake, iced in pink to match the colour scheme. After supper dancing continued until a late hour. Those present included Mr and Mrs H Wood. Columba Old Girls’ Dinner. One of the most successful functions in connection with the twenty-first birthday celebrations of the Columba College Old Girls’ Association was a very largely-attended dinner held in the beautiful surroundings of the Tudor Hall on Saturday evening. The tables were artistically decorated with the college colours, and at the table where the guests of honour were seated the dainty place cards took the form of the Old Girls’ badge. All the toasts were honoured with great enthusiasm, some of the speakers being Miss Ross, patron of the association, Miss Ashworth, principal of the college, and the presidents of the various branches of the association. At the conclusion of the dinner the guests, who numbered almost 150, adjourned to the Somerset Lounge, where an opportunity was given of renewing old friendships. A short programme was enjoyed during the evening, the performers being Miss Kyra Payne (vocal solo), Misses .1. Begg, L,_ Samson, and Margaret Elder (vocal trio); humorous recitation, Miss D. On Monday evening the Tudor Hall presented a charming appearance, with masses of autumn Dowers,, interspersed with school pennants and all cleverly lit with myriads of coloured lights, when the Columba Old Girls held a dance to celebrate the twenty-first anniversary of the opening of the college. Mrs Templeton, president of tho Old Girls’ Association, received the guests in tho lounge, a sheaf of gold chrysanthemums with which she had been presented by the Old Girls’ Association toning in charmingly with her frock of old cold crepc. The chaperons were Miss F. J. lloss, wearing black lace; Miss C. M, Ashworth, black velvet and cream lace; Lady Sidcy, amethyst velvet ; Mrs Donald Reid, lilac velvet; and Mrs R. A. Ewing, black crepe threaded in gold. Miss Roes and Miss Ashworth carried posies of yellow narcissi tied with blue and gojd ribbons, tho gifts of the committee. During the second dance eight debutantes were presented by Miss Ashworth to Miss Ross arid Mrs Templeton, each receiving a posy similar to those already mentioned and each dressed in white or cream, with long gloves or mittens. They were Misses Leslie Alexander, in sand crepe with loose frilled sleeves and neckline, crystal buttons at tho back of the bodice, a crystal necklace, and a cape edged with feather trimming; Roberta Baird (Invercargill), in water-marked velvet, with bell sleeves, and a bateau neckline edged with velvet and gold lame roses; Daphne Brookfield, in close-fitting lace Haring at the foot, and having puffed sleeves and a plaited belt; Hughena Don (Tekapo), in crepe de chine, with a quaint neckline, a sash, and a large rose-red Dower of taffetas on the left shoulder: Margaret Elder, in a period dress of taffetas, with an off-the-

shoulder neckline, a high waistline, sash ends falling from a rose at the back, and two pink velvet flowers on the front of the corsage; Isabel Fraser, in satin and net curiously cut so as to form a pattern of leaves on the bodice, with a flared skirt and a sash; Edna Hobbs, in phantom crepe, the bodice outlined with pintucks and tiny buttons, a frill at the foot of the sekirt, high puffed sleeves, and a silver lame sash; and Marjory Taverner,/in taffetas ' made with a cowl neckline, " sleeves, outlined in accordion pleats, and accordion pleating finishing the skirt.
