MOSGIEL TELEPHONE EXCHANGE

At last night’s meeting of the Mosgiel Borough Council the DirectorGeneral of the Post and Telegraph Department, Wellington, applied to the council’s letter about telephone hours and charges. The council desired—(l), that the hours observed on Sundays and holidays during the summer months be continued throughout the year; and (2) that the charges for short-distance toll calls be reduced. The reasons for declining the requests were given at length. - _ The council discussed the letter and expressed great disappointment at the department’s letter.. It was decided to reply that the council disagreed with the view expressed with regard to winter Sunday hours. The council contended that the main consideration should be the amount received by the department from telephone rentals and not the revenue received from Sunday toll charges, which must be small in any case, and asked that its request be further considered. With regard to toll charges the council again urged that the charge be reduced to 3d, particularly in view of the fact that the charge between Dunedin and Mosgiel •fas 4d 'and between Mosnie) and On tram a like sum. whereas the charge between Dunedin and Outrnm was only 4d. The council recognised the position of the department with regard to the charge at the public call office.
