CHANGE OF LUCK

RACING MOTORISTS MEMORIAL DAY RACE. INDIANAPOLIS, May 30. Kelly Petillo, the Los Angeles driver, who won the Memorial Day 500-mile automobile race, was down to his last penny before his luck finally broke on Thursday. He hammered over the rough brick track in 41i 42min 22sec, shattering the record. His average speed was 106.240 miles per hour. Wilbur Shaw_ was second and Bill Cummings, the winner last year, was third. Coming out of a treacherous northwest turn 32| miles after the start, Clay: Weatherley lost control of his machine when he was travelling at 110 miles per hour. The car hit a wall, careered down the track, through a wooden fence, and leaped end over end on to the grass in a field. This machine had already cost the life of Johnny Hannon, of Norristown, Pennslyvania,' in practice runs.
