OBITUARY
. REV. S. A. GOLDSTEIN DISTINGUISHED Mill [Peb United Press. Association.] AUCKLAND, May 29. One of Auckland’s most respected Citizens, the Rev. S. A. Goldstein, formerly for 54 years rabbi of the Auckland Hebrew congregation, died tonight, in his eighty-second year. His passing followed closely -upon that • of Mrs Goldstein j whose death took place a few weeks ago. . Mr Goldstein, who retired from active ministry last December, held a high place in Anglo-Jewry and in the life of Auckland. Before coming to the dominion he was minister at .Toowoomba, Queensland, and West Maitland, New South Wales. His profound knowledge of Hebrew- language and literature was placed freely at the disposal of Christian theological students.At his eightieth birthday, celebrations in 1933, Dr H. llanston, principal of Trinity Methodist College, paid a tribute to the manner in which Mr Goldstein had revealed to the students of other denominations many of the beauties of the ancient Hebrew tongue and to his liberality and breadth of mind.In 1928 the title of “ Morenu,” meaning “ Our Teacher,” was conferred upon Mr Goldstein by the Chief Rabbi of the British Empire in recognition of his long and devoted services to the cause of .Judaism, . On Mr Goldstein’s retirement last December a bronze tablet was placed in the vestibule of the Synagogue commemorating his 54 years of faithful service. His successor is the Rev. A. Aston, who for three years was assistant rabbi. He leaves one son, Dr Herbert Goldstein. Another son, Dr Henry Goldstein, died in England shortly after taking his medical degree.
