CANONISATION OF MARTYRS
STATELY CEREMONY AT ST. PETER'S FIFTY THOUSAND PEOPLE PRESENT Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright ROME, May 19. (Received May 20, at 1 p m.) Magnificent ceremonial and traditional observances, only equalled by the patronal feast,of Saints Peter and Paul, attended the canonisation at St. Peter’s of Sir John Moore and Cardinal Fisher in the presence of 50,000 pilgrims. Seventy cardinals and 80 archbishops also attended. Seats were specially reserved for the. 40 descendants of both martyrs. The stately ceremony lasted five hours, beginning when the Pope, enthroned amid cardinals, adjudged the advocates’ formal request for a Papal decision. A cardinal -responded: “ The guidance of God must bq invoked,” after which the litany of the saints was recited and the Sistin© Choir sang ‘ Veni Creator.’ The Pppe having granted the third - request for canonisation, the advocates returned thanks.
The bells of St. Peter’s led every belfry in Rome in a peal of joy. Pontifical High Mass was celebrated. The Papal homily included an adjuration to England to return to Catholicism. The basilica was floodlit in the evening. The entire ceremony was broadcast.
