CANTERBURY MARKETS
[Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, May 17. The potato market is quiet, but firm, notwithstanding a slight easing in Auckland. The northern weakness is not influencing values here, which are practically on a level with those recorded last ;week, Tlje quotation for prompts is slightly better at £5 12s 6d, f.0.b., for whites, with May-Junes at £5 15s. There'is little business at the latter price. . Dakotas, for prompt delivery, are quoted at £5 7s 6d to £5 10s, purchases having been made at the former price yesterday. For May-June the figure is £5 10s to £5 12s 6d, but there is a dearth of inquiry at the higher price. Farmers are not offering to much extent, the general impression being that prices are likely to firm. The quotation is £4 per ton, on trucks, for Dakotas, and. £4 Ss for whites, but the proportion of the latter offering is small. The Waipiata lifted 1,750 sacks from Timaru and 1,050 from Lyttelton for Auckland, and the Port Whangarei is taking parcels to northern coastal ports. Onions are becoming scarce and of indifferent quality, and prices have firmed slightly. Quotations to farmers are from £ll 10s to £l2, according to quality. Oats, chaff, peas, and fowl_ wheat show no change, and little business is passing. Oats are quoted at 3s 2d and 3s 3d, f.0.b., s.i., for Gartons, and fowl feed at 4s 3]d and 4s 4d, f.0.b., s.e., for free and board wheat respectively. The seed market is lifeless, although all classes are firmly held. Best samples of red clover are worth 8d per lb to farmers.,
