WIRELESS BEACON ESSENTIAL

GUIDE IN HAURAKI GULF [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, May 17. The necessity for a wireless beacon in the vicinity of Hauraki Gulf to guide vessels arriving at or leaving Auckland was mentioned by Captain E. R. Johanson, commander of the Matson liner Monterey, which arrived from Los Angeles this morning. The absence of a wireless beacon' delayed the vessel’s arrival by over an hour owing, to foggy weather being experienced when she reached the New Zealand coast. Captain Johanson said had there been a radio beacon on Tiri Tiri Island or the mainland he could have used the vessel’s wireless direction finder to guide him past various islands which, at present are a danger to mariners working the Gulf in very thick weather.
