SOUTHLAND RACES

VENUE WINS GUP UMTALI SCORES IN STEEPLECHASE

[By St. Clair.]

After light showers during the night the weather broke fine for the opening clay of the Southland Racing Club’s winter meeting, and there was an excellent attendance, the gate receipts being £ls better than on the corresponding day last year. The course was heavy and inclined to cut up as the racing progressed, and this no doubt was the chief cause of several well-backed horses failing to run up fo the form expected of them. Backers of first favourites had a bad run on the win totalisator, Uintali being the only first selection to score, and was also the only Wingatui-trained horse to bo returned a winner. Chhota, who was selected as first favourite for 'the Southland Cup, was in charge to the turn for home, but then failed badly. Umtali was not hurried over the early stages of the steeplechase in which he gave an excellent exhibition of jumping, and over the last half-mile he out-galloped the opposition. In this race Membo, who is booked for a trip to Victoria, gave a much better exhibition than ho did at Wingatui last week, and had ho not been asked to cover quite a lot of unnecessary ground must have finished into a place. Red Lance ran another good race, and might have troubled Umtali had ho not hit the second fence of the stand double and the last fence hard. Despite the fact that there were only four star fens in the principal and last races, the wagering throughout the afternoon was spirited, and the totalisator handled £6,714 10s (win £3,210, place £3,504 10s) as compared with £6,419 10s last year.
