SHIPPING DISPUTE

AUSTRALIAN FREIGHTER HELD UP OWNERS ACCEDE TO DEMANDS. Press Association—By Telegraph— Copyright MELBOURNE, May 18. (Received May 18, at 10.30 a.m.) Because of a dispute regarding payment of overtime, members of the Victorian branch of the Seamen’s Union yesterday refused to man the Union Line’s freighter Kini and the vessel was unable .to leave for Tasmania. Officials of the Seamen’s Union said the cause of the dispute was that the firemen claimed the minimum rate of one hour’s pay for overtime whether the work occupied an hour or less. After several unsuccessful calls had been made for a crew, the owners last night decided to accede to the firemen’s request and the Seamen’s Union agreed to allow the vessel to proceed to sfea. It is expected that the Kini will sail this morning.
