TANNERY FIRE
OUTBREAK IK SPRAYING ROOM FUMES FROM LACQUER IGNITE [Pen United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, May 16. Damage amounting to £I,OOO was caused by a fire this afternoon at the tannery of W. Sutherland and Co. Ltd., at Onehunga. Two thousand hides, in addition to portion of the premises, were either destroyed or damaged. The main buildings, however, were not affected. The origin of the fire 'was in the spraying room, in which highly inflammable lacquers are used.
A start had just been made with spraying the hides when the outbreak occurred. It is thought that the fumes from the lacquer were ignited through a defect occurring in one of the fans. The flames spread rapidly, but a youth at work in the room escaped without injury. Clouds of black smoke and Dames from 50ft to 60ft in height rose into the air. The fire was kept away from the main buildings, and, although it entered the sorting, drying, and curriers’ sheds, it was possible to salvage a quantity of hides. The damage to the building was confined chiefly to the spraying and sorting sheds, which were gutted.
