SPARKS FROM LOCOMOTIVES

CARE EXERCISED BY DEPARTMENT WELLINGTON, May 16. A statement that everything .that reasonably could be done to minimise the risk of fires occurring from sparks from locomotives was being undertaken by the Railways Department was made at a meeting of the Farmers’ Union Executive by the assistant general manager (Mr E. Casey), who attended to discuss questions of damage by sparks and the maintenance of railway fences. He pointed out that the department was not legally responsible tor the maintenance of fences, and said that £40,000 had been spent provnir* all the locomotives with spark arrestors, so it would be seen that the department was not lying down on the job. The department was as keen as anyone to prevent fires occurring.
