The third roiihd was fairly evenly contested, but Williamson used his reach to better advantage, and drove Tuckey out with long lefts and rights, doing the cleaner punching of the pair. The me ft traded punches for all they were worth in the; last round, but plying a good left Williamson kept his stbeky Opponent out,- though Tuckey came to light again towards the finish. A close decision went to Willinmsdn, last year’s winner in this division.

M'Kaii* plied a good Strarig'ht left to the head and body, and connected with an inside right to Hie jaw. Whcttef used his left occasiortally in. the second round, and camo out strongly for the third round, but could not' withstand _M‘Nair’s strong attack with both hands, M‘Nair lasted much better than the Otago man* who took a good deal of punishment in the last roirrid, but was still willing to mix it freely at the finish. M'Nair took the decision comfortably. , . •c. Steele (V.U.C.) 8.13 back-pedalling riirist of the way* and. once he found liisr dikt-ance, the Auckland man, who showed himselftd be a fefy sliifty' bosdf, gave a pretty display of two-handed hitting. Watt staged a good, rally' in tbe third roUrid, but did riot use his right hand so effectively as Brown. Watt ca'me Out very strongly for the last roifrid, but Brown fought back willingly, and a good bout Went to Brown by reason of his cleaner punching. , The most fiercely contested bout of the morning was fought between J. B.

Pieliminanes Keenliy Contested AiicMand Win Rowing The fixtures in the New Zealand interuniversity toi/mament' were commenced this morning, the four competing colleges being Otago University, Victoria University 'College (Wellington),, Auckland! University. College,, and Canterbury University College; The only final decided was Vne eightoar rowing race,, won. by/Auckland; details of 'which appear under the rowing; dispay' in another.: column, preliminaries in, the, boxing' were : staged, the feature’ being' the performance oh the Canterbury men, who: are represented to-night in each; of; the. sevem finals. The tennis, championships were commenced;, and; heats-in the swimming ayrd athletic championships were conducted; Abbreviations*used: are as follows :-*-0.U., Otago University; C.U.C., Canterbury University College; V.U.C., Victoria University; College; A.U.C., Aucl'/lynd University College.

J. IV/oore (0.U.) 9.8 and R. J. M. Meek I (W.U.C. 9.13, the two men trading |.punches for the best part of the four rounds. Meek opened out strongly in the first routid, and scored at close quarters with a left hook and a snappy short right, but Moore comeback hotly, ■ and in the second and third sessions forced the fighting for all he was worth, . connecting more often than his opponent with both hands to the head. ■ Meek came out fighting in the last round, and drove a left to the head and i right to the body, but he could not i keep Moore out, and the grandstand rally by the Otago man saw the decision go to Moore, whose forcefulness and : heavier punching entitled him to the award. WELTER-WEIGHT. When W. B. H. Statham (0.U.) 10.4 met 11. W. Edgley (V.U.C.) 10.3 there 1 Was a good deal of clinching, and both ■ men missed a lot, but what they may have lacked in regard to clean punching they made up for by the vigour ' they introduced into their work. Statham did most of the forcing in the first two rounds, using both hands to the head. A hard right to the jaw put Edgley down for a count of eight in the second round, but the Wellington man made a good recovery, and broke even irt the third, round, using his left ; well. Statham finished mote strongly than his opponent, however, connecting well with both hands to the head in the closing stages. Statham was the' winner.

A good set-to took place when B. A. Abbott (A.U.C.) 9.13 met 11. C. Pemberton (C.U.C.) 10.5, the latter leaking full use of his advantage in height, weight, and reach. Abbott did hot have the condition to maintain the pace sot by Pemberton, and the Auckland man, though giving a great exhibition of sameness, fought more spasmodically than Pemberton. The Canterbury man had his opponent down, twice, though Abbott appeared to relish* the rest. Abbott connected with occasional left and right swings, but Pemberton did much the cleaner work with both hands, and inflicted considerable pun.Vihment oh Abbott in the last round. The* referee intervened, Pemberton* winning oft’ a 5 technical knock-out. MIDDLE-WEIGHT. After being down for a count of three in the first round following an, inside right to the jaw, C. E. Barnes (C.U.C.) 10.151,■ staged- a great recovery to-take the decision from J. Makgill (A.U.C.) 10.8. Makgill had the better of the earlier stages,• and connected with a left hook and short right to the jaw. Barnes proved a very solid customer, however, and landed some, heavy rights to the head and' body'. Honours were fairly easy when the men came out for the last roniid, hut Barnes got home with softie hard rights and an occasional left, finishing well to collect the yofdict. After taking part* in the eignt-oar roWitig' race’, K 3. BOsWell (V.U.C.), . TtiJS,- Was still freSlr enough to win against J. V. M. KOfiA (0.U.), 10.12. Boswell’,, a southpaw, completely onti boxed : and outfought Kean, who indulged in a good deal of wjld hitting and frequently missed. Kean found’ Boswell’s stance very hard to overcome,, and for the greater part the Otago man fought On the' back-move, Boswell' employing both hands effectively in the : straight stuff. Kean scored with some good rights in the second round, but he coiild* not keep Boswell, out, and at close quarters the Wellington man 1 had- all the best of matters. Boswell was a good winner.

LIGHT HEAVY-WEIGHT. The bout, between 1?. Gaudin (C.U.C.), 11.6, and A. C. Stuart (A.U.C.), 11.2, ended abruptly in the second round! Gaudiri' did l all-the forcing,. and* StUart faff into a'Solid straight i left to the jaw, from which be failed to recover, »’ succession of lefts and rights : leaving Stuart open- for a right to the i jaw, which put him down- for' the full count. J, Ilott (V.tl.C.) 11.1 had too much experience for Gv F, V. Anderson (O.tJ.) 11.12, and, beating his opponent to the. punch, ilott scored freely With both h'andiv in straigh t work to the. - bead and body in the first two rounds, A'nderson’s judgment of timing. and distance being sadly oiit. After being on the receiving end for the greater of tire third' : round, AiVderScin rallied towhfds the close, but Ilott made holes in the Otago : maids defence'in 1 the- Inst'roiVnd, the re- ; fereo stopping, the bout, which went to Ilott on ai technical khock-but. HEAVY-WEIGHT. A. H. Armour (V.TJ.O.) 14.0 had a big advantage fit weight over' C. W. i Mack (O'.U.) 1 13.3,■ the latter b'Oxihg. almost con tinuously on the hackmovc and connecting- with- a left occasionally. Ar-, mour .proved too solid, however, and scored with a straight" left and right swing to the head, connecting more often thinf Ins opponent arid doing alj‘ of the forcing'. Mack used the ring, well in. the, last round, and drove home ; several lefts, but Armour force'd him : out. Tho: decision went to Armour, i . D. HudSdn (C.U.C.) 12.12 and A D. ' iH'GfCgor (A.U.C.) 12.1 indulged in a good dgal of Wrestling in the. first round, bht the bout sparkled inp in the ; second round, some willing exchanges being Witnessed. A right to the jaw when M'Gregor Was on he ropes saw ■ the Aucklander take > a count of five, bub using a good straight left he staged a good recovery, and the last round was. hotly contested, the decision going to Hudson.
