RHODODENDRONS

These beautiful flowering shrubs seem to thrive in and around Dunedin in a wonderful manner, and some beautiful specimens can bo seen in many of the gardens around the city. Most of the varieties are extremely hardy, and even when out of flower the foliage has a striking appearance. Where shelter is provided they never fail to bloom. From now on before the bard weather arrives is the best time to plant. The plants enjoy a good rich loam and well drained, but will not grow in soil containing lime, nor will they thrive where the salt spray from the sea reach them. The 'following are the best for Dunedin and district: —Thomson! (large crimson, very early), Ciliatum (lilac pink, very early). Countess of Haddington (large delicate pink scented), Princess Alice (large white, early). The Warrior (large rosy scarlet), Nosegay (beautiful pink), August Van Gecrt (purplish red, very large), Fastuosum H.PI. (large trusses double mauve), White Pearl, Pink Pearl, Alice (finer flower than Pink Pearl), Virginates (pure white scented), Racemosum (bright pink, early), Fragrantissima (white, .scented), and Hendersonii (a beautiful large white, scented, the latest of all in this district).
