HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING

S. JARVIS WINS SENIOR GUP JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP TO M'GREGOR With three New Zealand champions in their respective divisions and several others numbered among Otago’s best intermediates and juniors competing, it was not surprising that some fine performances should have been registered at the annual swimming sports of the Otago Boys’ High School, held at the Municipal Baths yesterday afternoon before a large attendance of pupils, old boys, and friends of the school. . The meeting was quite in keeping with the successful carnivals held by the school in recent years, and the organisation was perfect, a programme of 33 events being put through in ten minutes short of two' hours. Having regard to the fact that there were four more events than was the case last year and that the entries were. larger, this reflected great credit upon the officials, and especially on the superintendent (Dr B. H. Howard) and the assistant superintendent (Mr ' W. N. Wood). Mr J. P. Northey got the fields away to. good dispatches, and other officials were: Judges—Messrs 0. J. Begg, T. J. L. Rantin, and S. R. Crimp; timekeepers, Messrs J. Williams and W. G. M'Clymontj marker, Mr K. W. R. Glasgow. The Press stewards were P. Hamilton, A. M'Quitty, J. Chapman, and J. Cowie, boys of the school, who carried out their duties efficiently. In recent years the presence of some most outstanding performers has affected entries in the championship ©vents, and it was pleasing, therefore, to find that although the New Zealand triple intermediate boys’, champion, S. W. Jarvis, was a competitor for the Senior cup (won by his brother, W. J. Jarvis, on several occasions), there | were no fewer than . j aix boys taking S. W. Jarvis, part in the senior nli omninncli in pftll.

test. The conditions provide that each boy may compete in only four events, and in winning the senior cup with 20 points Jarvis took each of his races without any difficulty. He did not break any of his brother’s records, but in all of Iris events swam very well, especially as his winning margins were so great. For instance, he took the 220yds by more than a lap in the good time of’Smin 39 l-ssec, won the 33 1-3 yards back-stroke comfortably in 21sec, the 50yds similarly in 27sec, only twofifths of . a second outside his brother’s record, and the 100yds by a winning

margin of 12yds in 65 4-ssec, which was well below his best time and not so fast as the junior record he established last year. After such a long season Jarvis’s performances were indeed outstanding. Besides his championship successes he tied for first place in the neat dive with another promising performer in J. Sissons.

Runner-up to Jarvis in th© school championship was M. K. Nelson with nine points, this swimmer taking second place in each of the three freestyle events and showing more than ordinary promise. A. J. Ruff displayed fair style as a swimmer, but his best effort was in winning the diving championship, and lie finished third in the senior cup with eight points* H. Callender (the Otago intermediate breast-stroke champion) won the cup, 66 2-3yds breast-stroke championship in 55sec, and he and R. G. Gibbs each totalled six points in th© championship competition, the other competitor for which (D. M'Farlane) scored four. The junior cup drew four competitors, and was won by. the New Zealand junior boys’ champion, C. M'Gregor, whose total was 20 points. The only record that fell during the day was broken _ by this competitor, who won the 33 l-3yds breast stroke in 24 2-ssec, which was 3 2-ssec faster than the mark set by 6, Ruston in

1933. M'Gregor won each of the other three events in which he started, taking the 33 l-3yds in 18 l-ssec, 66 2-3yds in 43 2-ssec, and the 100yds in 73sec, merely having a swim-over at the longest distance. M'Gregor showed consistently good form throughout the afternoon. _ Scoring 16 points. K. Leckie finished as runner-up to M'Gregor, and in winning the diving gave an,attractive display, also performing well to win the 33 l-3yds back stroke in 23 4-ssec, and giving M'Gregor a good race over 66 2-3yds. ,H. A. L. Laing was third with seven points, and in the 33 l-3yds direast stroke was unofficially clocked to improve upon the existing record; by 2-ssec. when he finished second •to M'Gregor. , The handicap events provided very keen racing and good finishes, one of the outstanding competitors being G. Chambers, the New Zealand junior boys’ breast-stroke champion, who won a heat of the 66 2-3yds open breasts stroke handicap from scratch _in 50 l-ssec, which was the fastest time of the day. The standard of diving in both championships and in the open event was a high one, the competitors showing a good all-round knowledge of the art. Results: —
