NEARING THE END
THE LEGISLATIVE PROGRAMME COMMERCIAL TRUSTS MEASURE UNLIKELY TO REAPPEAR [From Odr Parliamentary Kit porter.] . WELLINGTpN, March 30. 1 The immediate business before the House this final week of the sesion is the passage of the Finance Bill, containing a miscellany of relatively unimportant clauses of legislation, providing for the winding-up of the majority of tho companies of tho M'Arthur Investment Trust group, and a day’s debate on unemployment. As the result of Saturday’s sitting, the only one of the entire session, three measures were passed. These ware the Native Purposes Fund Hill, the Board of Native Affairs Bill, and the Education Law Amendment Bill. With the work ahead of it, the House could complete its business by Tuesday night, but as the Legislative Council has been in adjournment since Thursday, and is not reassembling until Tuesday afternoon, tho usual last-minute hold-up will occur. Therefore it will not be practicable for the Government to conclude the session before Wednesday, night. On Monday the House will deal with the Finance Bill and the Local Elections . and Polls (Temporary) Amendment Bill, and possibly the M'Arthur legislation. Tuesday has been set aside for a full-dress debate on unemployment.
It is unlikely that the Commercial Trusts Amendment Act will be again heard of this session. Should it reappear for further consideration it is certain to encounter sufficient additional opposition, to bring about .its withdrawal. The measure is in the hands of the Prime Minister, who has been singularly unfortunate in the reception that the few Bills sponsored by him have had in the present Parliament. However, the legislative worries of the head of the Government cease temporarily on Monday night, since Mr Forßes, accompanied by Mrs Forbes and his staff, leave for Auckland by the limited express to join the Aorangi for Vancouver, en route to London.
