OIL DILUTION IN THE CRANKCASE

The lubricating qualities ,of even the best oils are quickly deteriorated when Hie oils are diluted with petrol. Two of Ihe most common ways in which the oil in the crankcase of a motor car becomes diluted are by allowing the engine to idle for any length of time and by, continually driving in high gear at low speed. In both cases the fuel is not completely burnt,- and some of it drains into the crankcase, washing the oil from the cylinder walls as it docs so. It is preferable, therefore, to switch a motor off and start it again when required, than to allow it to idle for long, and to change into a lower gear rather than hang on to “ top ” at slow speeds.
