OILING ELECTRICAL UNITS
TOO MUCH IS DAMAGING The dynamos and starters on cars re* quire very little lubrication, and experts recommend that only one or two drops be. used every thousand miles. Oil similar to household oil is suitable for this purpose. Car engine oil is far too heavy. The bearings on most of these electrical units are of the ball or roller type, and a felt washer fits on the shaft and acts as an oil reservoir, from which small quantities are fed regularly to the bearings while the shaft is revolving. If too much oil is fed to these bearings it will eventually find access to the commutator. _ Mineral lubricating oil is, m itself, when containing no impurities, an insulator. Therefore, if a film of oil is interposed between the carbon brushes and the commutator part or complete failure of the generator or starter will occur. Jf oil containing impurities owing to the presence of dust is on the commutator, considerable sparking will take place, and, ultimately, it will become necessary to remove the brushes and clean the commutator. Oil has a tendency to’ rot the silk insulation of the coils. Immediately the coils are short-circuited through failure of the silk insulation the equipment will fail completely, and the only remedy will bo a rewinding. That is another reason why it is most undesirable to over-lubricate bearings of generators and starters.
