BIRCHWOOD HUNT MEETING. The steeplechasing season in Southland will be opened in earnest to-mor-row. when the Birchwood Hunt will hold its annual totalisator fixture. Excepting in the two races confined to qualified hunters the fields are good, and many of the horses racing will appreciate the yielding going after racing for some months past on firm tracks. The following horses should race prominently in their respective engagements : Hunters’ Flat. lira. —Panocha, Towing, Coroner. Birchwood Novice Handicap. sJ'. Ballad, Vavemai, Princess Balboa. anti 856vds. JOTTINGS. Nominations for the Beaumont Racing Club’s Meeting close at 5 p.m. today. Tuapeka County Jockey Club nominations close this evening at 8 o’clock. The hist race at Invercargill to-mor-row is scheduled to start at 12.45. Parasang has arrived at Invercargill, and will lie a starter in the Gardner Memorial Steeplechase to-morrow. Reports from Invercargill show that the course is sure to be yielding and slow for the Birchwood Hunt Meeting to-morrow.

Stecton, with a fair weight up, ran six furlongs in Iraiii 22 2-ssec on the outside of the course proper at Invercargill yesterday morning. The Wellington Trotting Club’s application for an extra meeting on May ti has not been granted, so that the light-harness season in Wellington is over.

The sale of Scratchmere Scar to a Sydney buyer is reported from Christchurch. He will accompany Silver Ring and be in charge of H. W. King. The price reported is 750 gs. Legatee, who cost 575 gs as a yearling, has now earned £1,060 in prize money. He will probably be sent to Sydney for the Easter racing at Randwick.

On the Invercargill tracks yesterday morning Galleon was credited with running the best six furlongs of the day when, on a sodden track, he beat Valiska in linin 22sec, the last half-mile being run in Msec. There arc thirty jumps in the four miles 856 yards of the Grand National, the first being 546 yards from the start, and there is a run of 494 yards from the last fence to the winning post.

At one time it was mainly jumping ability that pulled a horse through in the Grand National, but now pace is? also necessary for success. Last year Golden Miller won in 9.20 2-5, against the previous record'of 9,28. Quinopal, who tops the list ot acceptors for the Turi Steeplechase tomorrow, has been nominated both for the Otautau Cup. one and a-quarter miles, and Otautau Steeplechase, about two and a-half miles. Might is to do his Easter racing at Riccarton, where he will contest the Great Autumn Handicap. The racing he has had recently has brought him to the top of his form, and he should be able to give an excellent account of himself in the big nine and a-half. Negotiations for the purchase ol the South Otago pacer Grand Mogul were in progress during the Oamaru meeting, and J. Eraser, jun., drove him on the second day. It is now announced that the horse has been bought by Mr G. J. Barton, anti has joined C. DunIcvey’s stable.—* Timaru Herald.

Inflation is one of the interesting cutrants at the Easter meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Clnb. Apparently there is a hope that he will stand further racing. He has been oft' the scene since his successes during the summer holidays. - Cuddle continues in active work at Hastings. She will race there on Saturday, and is booked for another trip to Riccar.ton at Easter. Cuddle lightened up as the result of her last trip south, which was no doubt the reason why she was not asked to race more than once at the Wellington meeting. Dazzling Eyes pleased track watchers at Invercargill yesterday morning by the manner in-which she ran out six furlongs. After covering the first_ two in 25 3-sscc, she completed the journey in Imin 24 3-3 sec, Sim had Memories for a companion, biit he is not ready yet. Venite finished on better than Toreador or Cough in a gallop over a mile at Invercargill yesterday morning, _the winner’s time being Imin _ 51 3-ssec. Toreador was conceding weight to the

others, and being such a good mudlark must be given a chance in the President’s Handicap to-morrow. The Manawatu Racing Club’s Autumn Meeting last week-end was generally conceded by officials to have been the most successful the club has enjoyed in recent years. There was an all-round increase of revenue, and the totalisator returns were up not only nearly 50 per cent, on last year, but also over 20 per cent, on two years ago. Vintage has been blistered and been turned out on his owner’s property for a few months’ spell. His two-year-old half sister, Lady Graceful, who accompanied Vintage to Australia, but did not get an opportunity to appear in public, was to have been raced at the Easter meeting at Ricearton, but contracted a cold on the voyage home. , , The North Island Pukeko, who has been nominated for the Riverton meeting, is a four-year-old black gelding by Arausio from the Signor-Blemish mare, Defection, and thus a half brother to Retract. Pukeko has done little racing, but has shown, fair form at times, and was successful in the Novice Plate at the Wopdville meeting last month, when the runner-up was Darecourt. He is one of B. Burgess’s Mastertoa team. Gay Blonde did not fulfil her engagement in the Awapuni "Cup, and although. she lightened up a trifle after the Thompson Handicap there was nothing to prevent her taking her place in the field had her connections so desired. They preferred to wait for the Great Npfthern Oaks, a race iu which trainer P. E. Pope has established a great record. Owners and trainers at the Mauawatu meeting last week signed a petition to the racing authorities requesting the allowance of the use of hoods on horses in races, floods, or blinkers, are a familiar sight in England and America, but they are not allowed berq. Amongst the owners who signed were Messrs’ T. A. Duncan and G. M. Clime.

The Sydney jockey, J. B. Pratt, received a present of £SOO for his win on Sylyandale iu the Australian Cup. The boys who looked after Sylva.nda.le were riot forgotten, nor was the farrier who shod him. The proud owner distributed bank notes among them. After bestowing those favours the owner, “ Miss Lorna Doone,” the wife of a Sydney doctor, fed Sylvandale with loaf sugar, of which the colt is very fond.

Although she does not hold a trainer’s license, Miss N. Wilmot manages a big team in England. Her stables are at Bin field Grove, Berks, and she has fifty-four horses in her care. Of these twenty-four are two-year-olds and sixteen three-year-olds. Miss Wilmot was reared in the horse world, her father, Sir R. fl. Wilmot, being a licensed trainer, and she was his right-hand “ man ” for several years. Cadland, though fit and provided with chances over various distances recently, has demonstrated only too clearly that his best days arc long past, and Mr T. A. Duncan is therefore pensioning him off. He more than paid his way during his turf career, however, for he won sixteen times in sixtyfour appearances, and earned £3,371 10s in stake money. His most notable achievement was bis G.J.C. Stewards’ Handicap under 9.5, the third highest weight that has been carried to success in the race.

The totalisator was not a great success in the Irish Free State last year, the turnover being £IOB.OOO, an advance of only £3,000 on 1933. The report of the Board of Control stated there were three primary reasons why machine betting was not the success originally anticipated. One was that many persons vitally interested in the welfare of racing took no interest whatever in the tote, and that certain race executives, whose existence was almost dependent on its prosperity, were definitely hostile to it. The Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps constitute a double that has proved difficult to capture by the same horse. Lady Zetland was successful, as was her daughter Lady Lillian, but apart from these two Grand Knight is the only horse who has won both events in the same year. Many horses are miminated for the double each year, and for the next month’s events the following horses are dually engaged : —Polydora, Imperial Spear, Fracas, Variant, Grand Review, Sea Fox, Haeretomi, Tauramai, Kemal Pasha, Guarantee, Trivet, StoGton, Inflation, and Cuddle. Arcade, Royal Limond, and Speakeasy are the only Riccarton horses nominated for the Riverton Easter Meeting, and the trio figure in the big steeplechase events. The first-named has not been schooled this week owing to slight leg trouble, but has been giveh strong work on the flat. Speakeasy was expected to return to Riccarton this week from New Brighton, where be has had sea-water treatment, but he met with a foot mishap a few days ago, and will be left for a while to recover. It is not likely, therefore, that he will be at Riverton.

Remarkable improvement in racing finance during the past year is shown by the figures given in the annual report of the Singapore Turf Club. The surplus shows an increase of nearly 100 per cent, compared with 1933, totalling over £26,000 profit, after writing off £5,500 for depreciation and over £I,OOO donated to charity. The Government received some £30,000 from the tax on totalisator receipts and sweeps. The increase is mostly attributable to the new racecourse, which is one of the most modern in the Far East.

The King and Queen motored from Sandringham to Newmarket on February 1, stopping atEgerton House, whore His Majesty inspected all his horses, which are under the care of W, It. Jarvis, The King informed his trainer of the birth at Sandringham of the first foal bv Limelight, a colt out of Blairtoi. Limelight, the best horse to carry the Royal colours in recent, years, went to the stud in 1.933. F. C. Dnnlevy has added a new horse to the team he has in work at Addington. having received Grand Mogul this week. He is a four-yenr-o!d by Adioo Guy From Logan’s Mission, by Logan Pointer from Wild Queen, by Wildwood

Junior from Regina Belle. So he boasts a great pedigree, coming from the same family as Logan Chief and Native Chief. At Oamaru last week he was well backed each day, and finished close up to the placed horses.
