KAURI GUM

SUPPLIES AND EXPORTS DULL STATE OF TRADE. Supplies of kauri gum arriving ia Auckland during the month of January, amounted to 312 tons, compared with 165 tons during January of last year,, and 175 tons in the previous year, la fact there was only one month last year* February, in which this quantity was exceeded, the receipts in that period amounting to 325 tons. Against this the exports for th» month amounted to 222 tons, but thej. whole trade is vex - y dull at present* being almost at a standstill. Any littlej business that has been passing lately; has been in the cheaper qualities, which now form the bulk of the trade. th» supplies and the demand for the higher grade of varnish gums, which used to' be such a prominent feature of th« trade, having almost disappeared* Their place in the manufacturing centres of Europe and the United States has been taken by the cheaper grades from other sources, and the present trade from Auckland is almost entirely, limited to the lower qualities, which are used in the manufacture of linoleum. This is strikingly illustrated by the following table of the actual exports during January, showing the destination, the number of tons exported* the trade value, and the low averegtl export value per ton;— Value.
