Fifty pound egch was awarded each of fbur Wellington detectives by Mr Stillwell, S.M., as damages in their libel action agaihst the Nbw Zealand 1 ‘ Sunday News.’ The plaintiffs were Detective-sergeant W. Tricklebank and Detectives F. Hayhurst, F. N. Robinson, and W. R. Murray.' The article was published on January 19. Inter alia, Mr Stilwell said the rank of detective involved onerous and exacting duties and a high standard of conduct was expected of him. He was engaged mainly in the detection of crime, and he must rely very materially on the co-operation and assistance of the community. In his inquiries he became well known by reason of his activities, and any unjustifiable attack on his reputation, code of conduct. and ability in the discharge of his office exposed him to hatred and contempt, gravely imperilled his efficiency, and undermined his mana as a police officer. The costs in each case nmounled to £6 13s.
