POSTAL DISTRICTS

SCHEME OPERATING IN DUNEDIN EXPEDITING MAIL SORTING For some time the Post Office has fceen engaged in making the necessary arrangements for the introduction at Dunedin of the postal district scheme which has been in operation for several years in Auckland and Wellington, and which has proved of great assistance to postal officers in the quick and accurate sorting of correspondence. These arrangements have now been completed, and the scheme came into operation in Dunedin to-day, coinciding with the date fixed for the introduction of- a similar scheme for Christchurch. The scheme provides for the division of the metropolitan area into fifteen postal districts, to of which has been allotted an indicator according to the direction of each area from the city proper. The various districts (briefly described) and the relative postal indicator or designation allotted to each are shown hereunder :

Postal District. Indicator, City area, centring on C.P.O. ... 01 City residential area •• ••• 02 Dunedin North, Woodhaugh ... ... Glenleith and Leith Valley N® North-east Valley, Norinanby, Opoho, Dalmop NJil Ravensbourne, St. Leonards ... £O-1“, Maori Hill. Kilda Caversham, Kew, St. Clair ... i ... °WI Abbotsford, Burnside, Fairfield, and Green Island wn Bellekriowes, Maryhill, Mornington W 1 Brockville and Kaikorai Valley

Within the next few days, all business men and all householders in Dunedin will be informed by circular of the indicator allotted to the district in which their place of business or residence is situated, and they have been requested, in future, to show this indicator in the address given at the top of all letters written by them. Similarly, there should be added to the address oh all letters posted for de-

livery in Dunedin the indicator of the area in which the addressee lives. The use of indicators will greatly facilitate the work of postal sorters, and will reduce further the risk of delay in delivery. Lists showing the indicators allotted to the various areas and the streets included in each area will shortly be supplied to all business firms in Dunedin. From the information furnished it) these lists, business firms will be able, without difficulty t to ascertain the relative postal district, designation of each of their clients, and, in order to assist the Post Office in bringing the scheme into operation to the fullest extent possible, it is suggested that business firms in the city should arrange for the postal district indicator to bo inserted on the cards or lists of addresses of those persons or firms in the city with whom they correpond regularly or to whom accounts, invoices, etc., are issued. Householders should carefully preserve the circular showing the postal indicator of the area in which they reside, although should the circular be misplaced the necessary information may he obtained on application at any Post Office. The lists of streets in the metropolitan area showing the postal indicator for each street will also bo exhibited at all Post Offices in Dunedin and its en-

virons, and arrangements are being made to include the relative postal indicator in the address of each telephone exchange subscriber in the next issue of the Telephone Directory. “To be successful, the scheme must receive the whole-hearted support of the public generally, and the Post Office confidently solicits their help in the matter.” said the Postmaster (Mr J. Madden) to-day.
