The purchase of Signaller from the estate of the late F. A. and V. N. Price bv Mr W. B. Hazlett is raported. Signaller is a very fine upstanding seven-year-old gelding by Balboa from Miss Signal, and has been purchased with a view to making a jumper of him. The price is reported to have been £4OO, and for a horse of his type, soundness, and credentials Mr Hazlett appears to have secured a bargain. Signaller has already shown that'Mie can jump, and on the form he showed at Gore last week is not far from being it his best. ' „ „ ' Miss Signal, the dam Signaller, was purchased by the late F. A. Price for 43gns, and was by Signalman, from Miss Stent, by Randwick from Gipsy Girl by Kingston. At Invercargill to-day and to-mor-row the totalisator is being worked on the same principal as at Forbury Park and Wingutui last month. ■ Canterbury-trained horses nominated for the Wyndham Trotting Chib’s Meeting include Charleris Vale, Sylvia Sydney, Midshipmnid, Gamble, and Nobleman. The Kurow Jockey Club has decided to run the single pool totalisator, with two dividends of 75 and 25 per cent., at its autumn meeting on March 16. The Australian Jockey Club is seeking leave to appeal to the Privy Council against two decisions of the Equity Court of New South Wales concerning the exclusion of Rufus Theodore Naylor from the Randwick racecourse. It was thought Native Chief had seen the last of the race track, but evidently all Hope of winning a race with this one-time speedy pacer has not been abandoned. Native Chief has been nominated for the two principal events at Timaru.* Young Frank is now being trained by N. C. Price. L. A. Maidens having sold him. Young Frank has not .been the horse he once promised to be, and although he is liable to win a race at any time he does not appeal as an everyday proposition. Croupier has apparently not responded to the treatment of John Pottie and Sons as Chatham did. He was expected to run well in the six furlong Glenfield Handicap at Warwick Farm (Sydney) on February 16, but failed badly. According to a Sydney writer, he will now, unless he is sold, be returned to New Zealand. The winner of the Glenfield was the New Zealandbred Norman Conquest. He was one of the outsiders of the field, and the bookmakers gave him a cheer as he passed the post. The pacing gelding Worthy King lias been transferred to G. M'Kendry’s stable, and will make his first appearance under his new trainer at Wellington on Saturday. Worthy King did all his early racing under C. Davey, who won races with the gelding. About three months ago he was placed in G. M. Mouritz’s hands, and the son of Travis Axworthy improved under Mouritz’s treatment. When Mount/, was appointed trainer at Durbar Lodge bis team at Addington had to be sent to other trainers. Harold Logan concluded his holidays recently, and on Wednesday ho had the hopples on. He accompanied Billy Sundy in a serviceable effort on the grass* course at New Brighton. Harold Logan is big in condition, and is as bright and as perky as ever. He will be seen in action either at Addington •at Easter time, or he may give a series of exhibitions at the meetings to he held on the West Coast of the North Island. The circuit arranged in that

Prior to Saturday, New Zealand-bred horses had won the Futurity ou seven occasions, and Gladsome has the record of scoring two wins, in 1905 she won under 9./, and in the following year she carried 9.13 to victory. Four years later Soultline, who carried 9.8, was successful. Thirteen years then elapsed before another‘victory was credited to a .New Zealand-bred horse, The Hawk winning uudei 9.5, and in the following year Father’s Voice, 8.5, and The Hawk, 10.4, fought out the issue, the former winning by a narrow margin, iu 1931 the two New Zealanders, Phar Lap, 10.3, and Mystic Peak, 10.2, again filled first and second places. In the following year the three-year-old Ammon Ra scored under 9.3. A feature of the records ot this race is the number of victories scored by horses under the maximum penalty, 201 b, Eurythmic 10.7, Top Gallant 10.2, Gothic 10.0, Amounis 10.4, and Char Lap 10.3, have all accomplished this feat. Winooka, who was third on Saturday, won in 1933. Canterbury trainers are always on the look-out* for good promising horses, and .Southland is the happy hunting ground for many who wish to strengthen their racing teams (says the/Press’). Many pacers and trotters have come from the far south, notable among them being Cathedral Chimes, Satin King, and Moneyspider, while many other useful horses have raced well on Canterbury courses. The latest to arrive from Southland is Chachahco, a five-year-old gelding by Wrack from Ivy Audubon. A fine, big, strong gelding, Chechahco made his first appearance at New Brighton on Saturday, and though defeated, he left no doubt as to his stamina. In the Flying Handicap, when racing in a good position, he had a sulky wheel badly buckled when Racketeer, a big, ungainly pacer, put a foot through it. Under the disability Chechahco struggled on like a true game racehorse, and only the mishap caused his defeat. The Wrack gelding is one # of the best brought from Southland, *and possibly a New Zealand Cup horse in the making. An allegation that lie was “ framed ’ when a battery was found in his possession was made by P. O’Louglilin, jockey, who successfully appealed against his disqualification for life by the stewards of Rockhampton Jockey Club (Queensland) on December 26. In his statement to the Central Queensland Racing ‘Association O’Loughlin denied all knowledge of the battery which was found in his portmanteau in the jockeys’ roqm at Callaghan Park course. He said he had placed the portmanteau in the locker and locked it, and, returning after riding in the race, found the locker open with another key in it and the portmanteau gone. He complained to the caretker and the portmanteau was found in an adjoining locker. The stipendiary steward, on inspecting the portmanteau, found a battery inside. There is no evidence that 1 put the battery in the portmanteau,” said O’Loughlin. “ instead of being the guilty party 1 have.been 1 framed ’ by some enemy who desires to see my license cancelled.” The appeal was allowed and the disqualification removed.
