VICKERS AND GILMOUR FOUND GUILTY DETERRENT SENTENCES -- 1 [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, February 8. A verdict of guilty on all charges was returned by the jury at the conclusion of the trial in the Supreme Court today of Charles ' Ernest' Vickers and Ernest Mabin Gilmour, who were indicted on charges of conspiracy to defraud, and of misrepresentation in connection with the sale of shares in the Craftsman Manufacturing Company of New Zealand, Ltd. (in liquidation). The prisoners were sentenced by Mr Justice Smith to three years’ hard labour and four years’ hard labour respectively. In passing sentence Mr Justice Smith said it was always a difficult matter to deal with men who had been business men, and not in the ordinary way members of the criminal classes, but the offences of which both the prisoners had been found guilty were very serious. “ The verdict of the jury,” his Honour continued, “ has meant that this prosecution has been a _ salutary event. One of its results, it is hoped, will be to discourage fraudulent company promotion in New Zealand.”
