MR COATES REPLIES. Acknowledging receipt of copies of the statement prepared by Associated Chambers of ou the mortgage finance proposals (published in this issue), the Minister of Finance (Air Coates) points out that many conflicting opinions have been expressed, and some helpful suggestions made, and until these have been fully considered a decision cannot be arrived at on a number of points in the scheme. In these circumstances it should be realised that the discussions with the Chambers of Commerce Com-

mittee by no means represent the last word on the subject, and a definite decision will not be reached until the draft legislation has been considered by the Government and brought down in the House. “ I would also like to point out,” said Mr Coates, “ that as the result of

my discussions in the different centres, I am satisfied that the views expressed in your draft statement are not generally endorsed by the various interests enumerated in the second paragraph. The chairman of the Associated Hanks, for instance, has advised me that your committee does not represent the banks.”—Press Association. MOUNT NGAUROHOE.

Although Mount Nganruhoe was not in eruption this morning, it was throwing up a column of steam to a height of I,oooft. Mr R. Cobbe, manager of the Chateau Tongariro, said that the mountain was very active, and .there seemed to be a likelihood of a further eruption before long. Clouds obscured the mountain most of the morning, and a party was unable to make an ascent to investigate.—Wellington Press Association.
