POLICE COURT
SATURDAY, JANUARY/26. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) THEFT FROM COUSIN. Robert Coupar Forsyth (twenty-five) pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a suit, valued at £8 Ss, from Rangi Forsyth at Lyttelton on December 18. Senior-sergeant Packer asked for a remand, stating that the police had to communicate with Christchurch in this matter. Mr C, M. Barnett, for the accused, asked for bail. The suit, he said, had been stolen from a cousin. Forsyth was remanded until Tuesday, and released on his own recognisance of £2O. SHOPLIFTER APPREHENDED. Charles Nicol Stewart (thirty-six) admitted a charge of stealing goods of a total value of 11s 7d from a city store. Detective-sergeant Doyle told the court that Stewart was detected in the act of removing some cards from a shelf in the shop about 5 o’clock yesterday. He was detained until the police arrived, and other goods were then found in his possession. Stewart was quite fiank, and admitted that he had stolen the lot. He was under the influence of liquor, and drink appeared to be his trouble. He had committed’ five other offences, the most serious of which involved the conversion of a car, and he was “ under the influence ” on all these occasions. He was a married man and a relief worker. Stewart: I have never' stolen anything in my life until last evening. I don’t know what possessed me. Mr Garbutt (probation officer) said that Stewart had recently been discharged from probationary license. Drink was largely his trouble. The Magistrate said that he would take into consideration the fact that Stewart had not previously been convicted of any offence involving dishonesty. He would be convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within twelve months. His Worship also directed Stewart to take out a prohibition order.
