SANDERS CUP

CANTERBURY WINS AGAIN BETTY COMPELLED TO WITHDRAW [Per United Press Association,] HALF MOON BAY, January 20. The second race lor the Sanders, Cup was held at Paterson’s Inlet this morning and resulted:— Dene (Canterbury), 1. Monica (Wellington), 2. Evelyn (Southland), 3. Irene won by Imin 28sec with Evelyn a long way back. Betty lost a sail halfway through the second round and had to withdraw. The weather had moderated considerably when the second race was sailed over a triangular course in Paterson’s Inlet. The four boats got away to a fair start at 10-35. Irene took the lead, to increase it on the windward heat, and rounded the weather mark ahead of Monica, with Evelyn and Betty following in t hat order. All broke out more sail on the run before the wind, for Irene to complete the first round over 2min clear of Monica, Evelyn another 2min behind, and Betty last. The order was the same in the second round. Now the wind gathered force, and the spectators were treated to thrills as the boats heeled, righting again just as they appeared to capsize. Betty’s sail carried away, and she withdrew halfway through the second round. Irene kept drawing away, her skipper handling her with great skill on the weather beat. She completed the second round over 4min ahead of Monica, with Evelyn 6min further back. The third round saw Irene maintain her lead, but on the weather beat, Monica and Evelyn stood well inshore to gain a little, but Irene rounded the weather mark for the last time, 3min ahead. Her skipper was satisfied with his lead, and did not increase sail, but Monica broke out his spinnaker and forced Irene to do the same. Four hundred yards from the line Irene lay becalmed, and Monica came up fast, but just when she appeared to be within striking distance, Irene caught a puff of wind and crossed the line, Imin 28sec ahead, with Evelyn a long way back, third. All the crews were the same as on the the previous day. Irene won the first race on Thursday.
