LABOUR CANDIDATES
LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS SELECTION BALLOT POSTPONED “ The statement that the Labour Representation Committee’s executive decided to postpone the selection ballot, of candidates for the forthcoming local body elections because of irregularities that had been brought to the notice of the returning oflicer is incorrect and without foundation,”' stated Mr Mark Silverstone, a member of the executive, to the ‘ Star ’ to-day. The reason actuating the executive to postpone the ballot was the inability of the returning officer, Mr S. B. Macdonald (secretary of the Waterside Workers’ Unionl to act on Monday night, said Mr Silverstone, who in reply to a question said he was not prepared to state why Mr Macdonald would not act on the date originally fixed. However, he would probably act when the ballot was taken in about a week’s time. No special meeting of the Labour Representation Committee was to be called to discuss the postponement, he stated. The meeting of the committee on Thursday night next was the usual monthly meeting, and was to be hold on the regular date. A meeting of members of the Otago branch of the Labour Party bad been convened by the returning officer for Monday, but an announcement was made to-day that the ballot had been postponed.
