Time, Imin 43sec. NOTES ON THE RACING [Special to the 1 Star.’] IMPROVED FORM. Palatinate and Bold Jim closely disputed favouritism for the Mungaroa High-weight Handicap, but the latter, after giving trouble at the start, was le A standing on his mark. When the barrier was released Verden went to the front going into the back stretch . and slowed the field up to a canter, so much so that Bold Jim, who was several lengths away when he elected to move off, was able to join up with half tho journey covered, but he did not take any part in the finish. Palatinate joined Verden rounding the far turn, and was in charge entering the straight from Royal Papa, Hot Stuff, Umpire, Revision, and Haere Tonu. Palatinate ran right away in the run home and had a very easy win. In a close finish for second money Hot Stuff hung on to beat Royal Papa, with Umpire, Revision, Verden, and Haere Tonu next. AN ATTRACTIVE WIN. Hostis made the field lor the Trial Plate look very moderate. He was always within reach of the leaders, State Bank and Wahinenui, and closely followed them into the straight. He had drawn to the front when the distance was passed, and went on to record a decisive win. Another close tussle for second honours ended in favour of Darecourt, who got up to head off Jubilee Song and State Bank on the post. Confiscation and Back Thrust headed tho remainder. STAUNCH FAVOURITE FAILS. Sara Smith, Princess Doreen, and Cherry King were the only candidates seriously considered in tho January Handicap, but whereas the two hist named took part in the finish, Sam Smith gave a poor finishing display after threatening danger inside the distance. Great Star took up the role of pacemaker at the end of a furlong from Princess Doreen, Cherry King, and Some Shamble, and was first to enter tho straight from Princess Doreen, Cherry King, Sam Smith, and Kemal Pasha. Great Star retired a furlong from home, and Cherry King taking charge drew away to win with something in hand. Guarantee put in a telling run over the final stages and secured second honours from Princess Doreen in the last stride. Lucidus was close up next, and there was then a gap to Some Shamble, Sam Smith, Great Star, Aiguille, and Kemal Pasha. A BIG DIVIDEND. Limulus monopolised the pool in the Camp Handicap, carrying close on a third of the two machine totals. She was prominent from the start, and was one of the leaders into the straight, hut was done with a furlong from home. Capital moved up on tho fails entering upon the course proper and was in front of Acceptable, Abbey Feal, Epris, and Tunneller at the straight entrance. Capital appeared to be a comfortable winner a few chains from the post, but Orby’s Last appeared on the scene with a late powerful run and overhauled the tiring leader in the last few strides. Acceptable hung on to gain third money from Tunneller. who gave trouble at the start and lost a good deal of ground. Travenna headed the remainder. The winner paid a big dividend. JUSTIFIED SUPPORT, Rod Manfred was sent out a staunch favourite for the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, and leading from the jump out was never in danger. He led early from Horowhenua, Tout Le Monde, Royal Artist, and Silver Sight, and was first into the home run from Tout Le Monde, Silver Sight, Red Sun, and Gay Marigold. Silver Sight did the best of these, but had no chance of troubling the leader, who had three Iciif.t’ - *to spare at the post. Gay Marigold finished fast to get within a length of Silver Sight, and Tout Le Monde was another length away, with Red Sun next. JUVENILE EVENT. Kotou was only moderately supported in the Nursery Handicap. She was one of the first to show out, but was well back from Pakanui, Shirley Dene, Alchemic, and Nigbtlass at the entrance to the course proper. Pakanui had enough at the distance, and Alchemic was left in charge. Kotou then put in a solid run on the rails, and in an interesting tussle wore down Alchemic to beat him by a neck. There was a big gap to Nigbtlass, who was followed by Severe, Dobliam, and Pakanui. LIGHTWEIGHT PREVAILS. The Metropolitan Handicap was run in a blinding rainstorm, and it was impossible to pick up any of the horses until just nearing the-post. Mother Superior, Rerepai, and Burnish appeared to be in that order inside the distance, with Wheriko in last place. Rerepai finished best to win by a neck from Mother Superior, with Wheriko a poor third, in front of Burnish, Golden Wings, Cottesmore, and Variant. NEVER IN DOUBT. The Douro Cup attracted one of the best fields in the history of the race, and but for the unfavourable weather a big pool would have been recorded. Another surprise awaited investors, as one of the outsiders, Miss Hushabyo, carrying No. 13, tho same as the winner of the previous race, stoic a inarch on the field as soon as the straight was entered upon, and ran home the easiest of winners. There was a great battle for second money, three horses crossing the line abreast. Knock Out got the verdict from Red Rufus and FcVrsen. Cyclonic was next, in front of Colossian, Heather Glow, and Quito Soon.
