THE ASHBURTON PRELUDE

[Per United Press Association.] ASHBURTON, January 19. Accompanied by a mounted escort (an officer and eight men frpm B Squadron of the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry), the Duke of Gloucester made a triumphal entry to Ashburton’s Domain today to receive a welcome as sincere as it was enthusiastic. The local population was supplemented by settlers from outlying districts, many of whom had travelled long distances for the event. In addition to the mounted escort the same squadron supplied a mounted guard of two officers and forty-four men of other ranks. The third feature was the large children’s demonstration. Replying to the civic address, His Highness said it had given him great pleasure to stay in such a well-known part of the dominion and to gain experience, under the most favourable conditions, of its pastoral industry.
