SINGLE MEN’S POSITION IMPROVED “ STAND-DOWN " WEEK ELIMINATED It should be of much interest to single men grouped in Dunedin to know that, as from the week commencing on January 28, 1935, the standdown ” week is to be abolished, and that work is in future to be provided every week. DUNEDIN CENTRAL BRANCH A meeting of the executive of the central branch of the N.U.W.M. was held on Wednesday evening. Mr G. Maitland occupied the chair. Mr H. Smith, of the Canterbury Unemployed Workers’ Association, attended . tnc meeting, and addressed the executive on the organisational work ox' the Christchurch unemployed, for which he was accorded a vote of thanks. A circular was read from the national organiser in Wellington re the proposed new scheme that comes into operation on January 28, and after being discussed it was agreed that the secretary convene a special meeting of the ex- * ecutive next Monday evening. Delegates appointed to address a meeting of the unemployed in Mosgiel (owing to their having received notice for camps) gave their report, which was received. A select committee was appointed to draw up a list of local demands for the unemployed after hearing the concessions that are granted to the Christchurch unemployed. Messrs M. Silverstone, M. 0 Rorke, ‘and Harrv Smith (Christchurch) were selected to speak at the Museum Grounds on Sunday afternoon, it was agreed that the workers’ charter be one of the main planks future to be discussed at open-air meetings and also . local demands. The secretary intimated that he had received various pay sheets from camps, which were purused by all present. The monthly financial statement was adopted, and various accounts passed for payment.
