The majority of the horses engaged to-morrow were racing at Wingatui last week or at “Winton earlier in the month;

and their form is now fairly well exposed. fn past 1 years the Wyndham Cup has provided many surprises, and to-morrow’s field is one that might cause another: hut the ■ good form shown by Cough last week should make her favourite for this race. *3he was very unlucky not to •’ have been returned' a winner in both of her races at Wingatui. tions, and at the same time enjoy all ’the attractions of picnicking on this prettily situated seaside course. This is one of the few tracks in O.tago that does not get very hard in a dry season, and for that reason it is likely that the fields will be good to-morrow. An excellent programme is provided, and with the good class of horse that has been engaged the racing should be good. The Railway Department has made special arrangements to cater for the heavy traffic that always offers in connection with this meeting. Fast trains will leave Dunedin at 9.15, 9.50, 10.15, and 10.27. arriving right at the course gates. The return trains will leave Waikouaiti at 4.40, 5.20, 5.50, and 6.20. For those who travel by motor arrangements have been made by the club for a system of parking on the sloping rises surrounding the lawn, so that a view of the racing can be obtained from each car. The recent racing at Wingatui should furnish an excellent guide as fo the form of most of the horses engaged, and the class of horses engaged is the best left in the South Island. This meeting will be the only one where punters will have the chance- of betting on the old system—7s per cent, to the winner and 25 per cent, to the second

horse. . The first race has been timed to start at 12.30, and as only 35-minute intervals between races have been provided for, punters will not be able to delay making their investments, as the closing time stated on the race cards will be strictly observed. The following is the card: — • 12.30

A special train will leave Dunedin lor the racecourse siding at 8, returning leaving Oamaru at 5.49 and 6.20. The course is in excellent order and the form shown at Waikouaiti will be the best guide to the form of the horses taking part at the meeting. RACE TRAINS TO-MORROW. The Railway Department • has provided an efficient service to cope with the popular meeting to be held at Waikouaiti. Past passenger trams leave Dunedin 9.15, 9.50, 0.15 and 10.27, returning leaving Waikouaiti 4.40, 5.-U, 5.50, and 6.20. In connection with the race meeting to be held at Wyndham a fast convenient special train from Dunedin has been arranged for. The return special train is timed to leave Wyndham racecourse at 5.45, and to arrive Dunedin Special excursion tickets will be issued to Wyndham by the special tram from Dunedin and stopping stations. ROI L’OR’S PERFORMANCES. Roi L’Or’s record now stands at sixteen wins, fourteen' seconds, -eight thirds, and two fourths out of sixty-six starts and his total stake winnings £7,670. His performances are; stakes.

JOTTINGS. Hoi I’Or’s two record-breaking performances at Auckland stamp him as the most brilliant pacer from ten to sixteen furlongs in Australasia. Recent showers in Southland have improved both the Wyndham and Invercargill tracks, and with a continuation of the fine weather will provide excellent going. ■ . It was fortunate for the Winton Trotting Club that seven of those on the card in the Commissioners’ Handicap were withdrawn, thus saving the necessity of the iWe being run in divisions. The Great Northern Derby, to be run to-morrow, should definitely decide which of the two, Sporting Blood or Synagogue, is the champion three-year-oid of the 1934-35 season. Both the Gore and Winton Trotting, Club’s fixtures last week would show satisfactory jirofits, and again demonstrated the popularity of the light harness sport in Southland. Visiting trainers to the Waikouaiti course are delighted with its condition this year, and those who have not been there for a season or two will be surprised with the improvement of the The Australian trotting trainer, W. ,Jjt‘Kay, has rearranged his programme for Auburn Lad, and has decided to remain in New Zealand for a few more meetings. After competing at the Auckland Trotting Club’s Meeting he will take the pacer to Hutt Park for the two chief races at the Wellington Club’s summer fixture on January 12, and will go on to Christchurch for the meeting at Addington on January 19. The prominent jockeys, K. Voitre and H. N. Wiggins, both incurred the displeasure of the stewards for their riding in the Auckland Cup. Voitre had the winning mount on Gold Trail, and the charge against him was that he interfered with Kiltowyn about the five furlongs post. The allegation against Wiggins ,was that when riding Solarium he interfered with < Great Star near the seven furlongs post. Each was suspended for one month. Quite Soon’s performances during the past twelve months have been very consistent, and her good second to Hunting Go in the Farewell Handicap last Thursday has brought her into favour for the Waikouaiti Cup to-morrow. J. Ross has a good record in connection with this race, and the two fairly sharp turns to be negotiated in the running of a ten furlong race at Waikouaiti will not trouble Quite Soon. “ Some men in the light harness sport are apt to complain about low stakes they have been asked to race for of late,” says the Melbourne ‘ Globe.’ “If they would consider and try to place the stakes they have been getting side by • side with the prices that farmers and graziers have been compelled to accept for their wheat, wool, butter, and potatoes during the depression their cause for complaint would not seem so great. Those engaged in the

sport can find some comfort in the fact that others who have helped to make the sport have seen worse times than we have experienced during the last two years. What others have done in the past, present-day competitors can accomplish by getting in touch with those who are doing their best. If the rank and file could see how great a part each competitor plays every time he drives a horse in a race he would be a prouder man.”

A correspondent under the name of “ Speedster ” inquires in the Christchurch ‘ Press ’ the relative speed of a man and a pacer over half a mile, a mile, and two miles. The fastest halfmile credited to a pacer is the 55 3-ssec by Directum 1. in 1916, and though half-mile records are not recognised in New Zealand Walla Walla covered the distance in 58sec when attempting a mile record. The best time of a runner in New Zealand is Imin 54. 4-ssec, made by D. Anderson and C. Evans, while Dr 0. Peltzer holds the world’s record of Imin 51 3-ssec. Over a mile the world’s pacing record is held by Dan Patch, Imin 55Jsec, and Auburn Lad in New Zealand did 2min 2 2-ssec, while J. E. Lovelock did 4min 6 7-10 sec, a world’s record, and R. Rose holds the New Zealand record of 4min 13 3-ssec. In a two mile journey the best is credited to Peter Manning, a trotter, 4min lOisec, while Harold Logan has 4min 12 2-ssec against his name. The Finnish runner P. Nurmi went two miles in Bmin 69 3-ssec. It will be seen from these figures a pacer will not travel quite twice as fast as a runner over half a mile and a mile, but over a longer journey the pacer’s advantage would increase.
