HOTEL WINDOW BROKEN
BOTTLE CONTAINED, COLOURED WATER;
A chase in Princes street in the early hours of, this morning, after a plate,glass window in a hotel had been broken and a bottle of “ liquor ” removed, resulted in the appearance in the Police Court td-day of a young man, Andrew Leslie M'Keagg. , - . .. .. He pleaded not guilty to wilfully breaking a plateglass window valued at about £3, the property of Albert Burrell, of the Oval Hotel. He was represented by Mr C. B. Barrowclough. Senior-sergeant Packer, in asking for a remand till Friday, said that a more serious charge would be substituted. ' An application for bail was opposed, the Senior-sergeant stating that the accused had given the police no .assistance. If he was allowed out on bail he would do other mischief. , The Bench: How do you know thatr 1 Senior-sergeant Packer: We know what is going to happen. Just after 2 a.m., the officer continued, the?window of the Oval Hotel was broken with the intention of stealing liquor. A bottle was missed from the window, and the licensee and another, man gave chase, and apprehended M'Keagg. The bottle was found near him, and he was then'the only man on the street, yet he denied being the offender. 1 His wrist was cut,]and he said it was cut on a wire on his bicycle. Accused had forgotten that there were finger prints on the bottle, and they would be sent to Wellington for identification. , , ~ „ . ~,T , Mr Barrowclough said that M Keagg could not assist the police, as he had ho knowledge of the affair.
