£3OO FOR HOSPITALS

PRACTICAL CHRISTMAS GESTURE BENEFACTIONS -OF FORMER DUNEDIN RESIDENT Already well known for Lis numerous benefactions to hospital institutions in Dunedin. Mr John Edmond, of Melbourne, has forwarded to Mr F G Duncan the sum of £3OO to be divided among hospitals as a means towards alleviating pain and helping suffering humanity.” Mr Edmond was a familiar figure in the commercial world of Otago and Southland when he was a traveller for the firm of John Edmond (now John Edmond Ltd.), and his generous gifts are a tribute to the regard he has for the city and the district. Mr Edmond desires that this money shall be put to practical use, and in a letter to Mr Duncan suggested that there could be no better plan than to expend it in adding, to the existing medical equipment of the various hospitals or improving their efficiency. The twelve hosiptals which will participate in the distribution of the money —£2s each—are as follows:—South Otago Hospital (Balclutha), Ranfurly Hospital (Ranfurly), Vincent Hospital (Clyde), Cromwell Hospital (Cromwell), Frankton Hospital (Queenstown), Tuapeka Hospital (Lawrence), Tapanui Hospital (Tapanui), Wallace Fiord Hospital _ (Riverton), Seddon Memorial Hospital (Gore), Port Chalmers Cottage Hospital (Port Chalmers), Kaitangata Hospital (Kaitangata), and Middlemarch _ Hospital (Middlemarch) _ Mr Edmond is desirous that the nioney should be expended along such lines as he suggests before Christmas arrives. In* view of the fact that Christmas is now so near in some cases it may not be possible to meet this request, but Mr Duncan has written to the various boards. concerned suggesting that they should take up the matter at the earliest possible moment. In addition to his gift of £3OO Mr Edmond has sent forward, in accordance with a practice which he has observed for a number of years, an amount which is to be distributed between the patients and staffs respectively of St. Helens and Batchelor Hospitals as a special Christmas present.
