BEST FOR YEARS

PENINSULA A. AND P. SOCIETY'S SHOW hackney classes particularly strong Both in regard to the quality of the stock exhibits _ and the total of entries, the Peninsula Agncultmal and Pastoral Society’s show at Portobello on Saturday was the best held in the district for some years. This uas the fifty-seventh annual hxtvire, and was well supported by exhibitors and public, the gate receipts being in advance of those of last year The weather was overcast, and light lam fell at intervals during the afternoon, and although not very . pleasant for the visitors, the conditions were perfect for showing the stock to the best advantage. The hack classes were particularly strong, being better than ever before, both numerically and in quality while the cattle ring entries exceeded those of twelve months ago. Of good quality horses, the hackney and pony classes constituted an excellent ring, said the judge, who was particularly pleased with the exhibits in the list lady’s hack class, tor a country show, the pomes were splendid quality animals. Although the draught horses were a very fine lot as a whole, remarked the judge, the younger entries in the Clydesdales were inclined to be poor in the feet. A few of the Clydesdales had been badly scarred, which somewhat detracted from their showing. The rings of spring carters were excellent. Mr M. Geary’s champion mare was a splendid animal, well put together. ~ ' The shorthorn cattle section was a small one, but the judge said that despite this some fine animals were shown. The championship ribbon tor the bulls was won by Mr A. Struthers, whose exhibit was an outstanding example of the breed. The championship for the opposite sex went to Mr H Hughes. There was a splendid display of Ayrshires, including a few Dunedin prize-takers. Mrs A. M* Taylor’s bull took the championship, as it did at the metropolitan showlast month, while the reserve champion belonged to Mr J. Weir, and was of a good type. There was some excellent competition -in the female classes, with Mrs A. M. Taylor gaming the majority of the awards. The entries were very even. The Friesians were a little disappointing to the judge, who stated that they were a fair lot, but there was not a great deal of competition among them. The cattle could have been improved by a little more condition, thenstate having been, the result of the recent dry weather. Some had also been heavy producers, and this would account for their poor condition. The champion cow in milk was of a good type, and had a fine constitution. She was owned by Mr J. Cross, while Mr A. C. Miles owned the champion bull, which was quite an ordinary exhibit. In the opinion of the judge, the cross-bred cattle were good all through, and could have been shown anywhere in the dominion. The yearling class drew a satisfactory entry of ten very fine animals.

The Jersey classes did not draw the entries so well as the other cattle sections, hut the judge said that the quality was outstanding. One competitor . (Mr P. Hellyer) took three places in the aged cow class, the winner being afterwards placed as the champion. The dry cows were very difficult to place, being a very even lot. Quality was shown in the two-year-old heifers, the first three being much the same, while the yearling bulls were equally as good. The firstplaced year-old bull was a clear winner, and the first prize two-year-old bull, another of Mr P. Hellyer’s exhibits, took the champion ticket. The first two in the aged class bulls took some separating, the winner eventually putting up a great show for the championship, which lie would have won had he not been hunched when walking. In the fat sheep classes there was practically no competition, but the exhibits forward were outstanding quality, said the judge. The fat lambs were also really good, and very even, Mr M. Geary’s winning pen being excellent.

There was a large entry of dogs, some of which were very fine. The judge of the vegetables said that there was a very good display of pota-

toes, which were clean, well grown, and fairly even. The collections of vegetables were most pleasing, some of the dishes shown being above the ordinary. Evidently great care had been taken in the production of such fine specimens. The baking was excellent, was the opinion expressed by the judge, who added that the light and dark fruit cakes were of a very high standard. Quality butter was displayed before the judge, who suggested that the fancy class be deleted in future, and a class for those who had never won a first prize substituted. During the afternoon a short programme of competitions was held, the various equestrian events giving entertainment to the visitors. As usual, the show was handled in a very businesslike manner, the efficiency of the energetic secretary (Mr John Seaton) being mainly responsible for the success of the fixture. The installation of a sound system on the ground made it possible to announce the results promptly, and to broadcast, a musical programme. The following was the prize-list:— HORSES. DRAUGHTS.
