WAITAKI GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL

THE BREAK-UP FUNCTION LARGE GATHERING OF PARENTS AND FRIENDS There was a very large gathering ol parents and friends of the Waitaki Girls’ High School for the prize-giving function in the school hall. Dr A. Douglas (chairman of the Board oi Governors) presided). . The principal address was given by the Rev. Thomas Tait, who dealt m an interesting style with the cultivation and beauty of the English language, ol which all were proud. He pointed out how some people seemed to ihink it necessary to obtain a degree before one could he termed really educated or cultured. It was necessary to learn s? much French, Latin, and such-like subjects to pass examinations, and it was a pity to see English placed in a subordinate position. It was deplorable how people failed to realise the value and importance of a sound knowledge of the English tongue. Mr Tait referred to the change thsfc had taken place in woman’s sphere since the days of Dc Quincey, and nowadays it was even more necessary to speak the mother tongue gracefully and forcefully. Language was a great tell-tale. It did not matter how carefully and well one dressed, as soon as one spoke it could be judged how cultured he or she was. Mr Tait stressed the value of correct words and syntax, pointing out that the truth could not be spoken without accuracy in grammar and choice of words. The best way to learn how to speak well was by listening to others, and consequently it was essential to be careful of environment. Truth of expression was necessary, but everyone should try to make speech as beautiful as possible. The English language was so beautiful, said Mr Tait. It was so flexible, so rich for expressing things of the imagination both in prose and verse. Mr Tait spoke of the beauty in the language of the old writers. Modern writers gained their style and power of expression from such masters as Shakespeare and Milton, and from the Old Testament. If every one of the girls would study from these old works they would cultivate a beauty of expression, a correctness of diction and syntax that would attract and delight all hearers. The presentation of Junior High School prizes was made by the mayoress ("Mrs M. F. E. Cooney) ; those of the Senior School by Mrs A. Douglas: the presentation of the Waitaki Old Girls’ Association’s prizes by Mrs H. T. Hall (president of the association) ; the presentation of the Association of Commercial Science junior championship medal by Mr D. V. G. Smith; and the sports prizes by Mrs H. S. Orbell. Mr Smith, in making the presentation of the association’s medal, said it was a unique distinction for Miss Morrison and for the school in gaining the junior championship in typewriting for New Zealand. The chanipionship was for accuracy and speed in fifteen minutes’ typing. On behalf of the association he congratulated the winner and the staff on the outstanding achievement.

The Mayor (Mr M. F. E. Cooney) thanked-Mr Tait for his very fine address, which was appropriate on such an occasion. Mr Cooney also proposed a vote of thanks to. the principal and staff. The school was exceedingly fortunate. said Mr-Cooney, in having such an outstanding character, a 'wide scholar, and a woman with such deep sympathy as it had in its principal, Miss J. B. Wilson. Miss Wilson also played a big part in the civic life of the town, and on behalf of Mrs Cooney and himself he thanked her sincerely for her services in the relieving of.distress in Oamaru. The staff was a very loyal one, and the school was indeed fortunate in having such a wonderful principal and such an excellent staff. During the ceremony songs were rendered by the girls, these being as follows: —‘ England ’ (C. H. H. Parry) i ‘ Three Kings of Orient ’ (J. H. Hopkins), ‘New Year’s Eve’ (Welsh tra-. clitional song), ‘School Song,’ and the dismissal hymns, ‘ God Be in My Head ’ and ‘ Lord Dismiss Us With Thy Blessing.’ The school song was outstanding for the fact that the words were written by Marjorie Mowat and the music by Dorothea Thomson—both pupils attending the school.
